Quedgeley Medical Centre (QMC) is a general family practice, striving to offer compassionate and personalised care to patients through a blended approach of traditional doctor and nurse appointments, modern-day technologies, and wraparound care covering physiotherapy, mental health, care coordination and social prescribing.
We offer a full range of contraception and family planning options, including:
Contraceptive pills
Coil (IUD/IUS) fittings and removals
Contraceptive injections and implants
Emergency contraception
Our Practice Nurses and GPs provide confidential advice to help you find the most suitable option.
We can also offer counselling and referrals for permanent contraception, such as female sterilisation or vasectomy.
Baby Checks
Our GPs carry out regular baby checks to monitor your child’s growth and development.
These appointments include checks on your baby’s weight, feeding, and milestones, and give you the chance to ask any questions about your child’s health.
You’ll be contacted when your baby’s check is due, or you can call reception if you’re unsure.
Baby Immunisations
We provide routine vaccinations for babies and young children.
When you come into the surgery, you will need your child’s “red book”.
A qualified nurse will give the vaccines (usually injections or mouth drops).
After the visit, your child might have slight redness or a mild fever — this is normal.
We will inform you when your child’s next immunisations are due.
Childhood Immunisations
We provide the full NHS childhood vaccination schedule to protect your child against serious diseases.
Appointments are carried out by our Practice Nurses, who are experienced in working with children and happy to answer any questions about vaccine safety or timing.
If your child may have missed a vaccine, please contact the surgery so we can check their record.
We provide regular reviews for patients with long-term conditions such as:
Asthma
COPD
Dementia
Diabetes
High blood pressure
Heart disease
Kidney disease
Learning Disability
Severe Mental Illness
Thyroid disorders
You may see an HCA for routine checks (blood pressure, weight, bloods) before meeting with a Practice Nurse or GP to review your results and update your care plan.
See below for more information about different types of review:
Asthma Review
If you have asthma and use inhalers, this is your check-up to make sure that your medicine is working well and to assess how well your asthma is controlled.
One of our HCAs will review your symptoms, medicines, and inhaler technique. They will carry out a simple breathing test (e.g. peak flow). If your asthma is not well controlled, you may need to see one of our doctors who will assess you and update your asthma action plan.
You will need to bring any inhalers (and spacer if you have one) to the appointment.
COPD Review
For patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), this review makes sure that any treatments you are receiving are working and your condition is stable. We will discuss your symptoms (breathlessness, coughing, sputum) and may do a lung-function test (e.g. spirometry). We will also review your medications, check inhaler use, and agree a plan for maintaining or improving your health.
If you have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), you’ll be invited for an annual review with our nursing team.
Please bring any inhalers you use to this appointment.
Diabetes Review
If you have diabetes, you’ll be invited for an annual review with our nursing team.
Your Practice Nurse will review your blood sugar control, blood pressure, and overall wellbeing, while an HCA may carry out pre-review checks such as blood tests, urine samples, and foot assessments.
Please avoid eating or drinking (except water) before your appointment and bring a urine sample.
We also recommend six-monthly blood tests
You will also be invited for regular diabetic eye screening. This process is managed by the NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Programme. Find out more here.
Dementia Review
Patients living with dementia are invited for an annual review.
Our HCAs complete physical health checks, and our Care Coordinators create and update the care plan, working with families and carers to ensure support is in place.
These reviews help to ensure medications, care arrangements, and local support services are current and appropriate.
Learning Disability
For adults on the learning-disability register, this is a yearly health check.
One of our HCAs will look at your general health (blood pressure, weight, heart, current conditions), followed by a review with one of our GPs who will review your medicines, vaccinations, and mental and social wellbeing.
The GP will discuss and produce a care plan for your care.
We will make sure you get any extra support you need and adapt the appointments to suit you (longer time, carer support, easy-read explanations, etc.).
Severe Mental Illness (SMI) Review
Patients with a diagnosed severe mental illness are invited for an annual health check.
Our HCAs carry out the physical checks (blood pressure, weight, blood tests, and lifestyle review), while our Mental Health Nurse completes the care plan and provides ongoing support.
This approach ensures both physical and mental health needs are reviewed and supported.
Screening Services
Cervical Screening (Smear Tests)
Cervical screening helps prevent cervical cancer and is carried out by our Practice Nurses.
You’ll be invited automatically when your test is due (every 3 or 5 years depending on your age). This invite process is managed by the NHS Cervical Cancer Screening Programme. Find out more here.
You can also discuss other women’s health issues, such as contraception or menopause, during your appointment.
If you’re anxious about the test, our nurses will take time to explain everything and ensure you feel comfortable.
Other Screening Services
The NHS runs a number of routine screening services for patients within specific cohorts, these include:
These services are managed by the corresponding NHS Screening Programme.
Where appropriate, we offer follow up and support to deal with further investigations and positive test results.
Where clinically appropriate, we may offer or refer for adhoc screening to rule out cancers as part of our ongoing care for patients.
Other Services
Diagnostic Tests
Sometimes we need extra tests to check or monitor health conditions. This may include blood or urine tests, breathing or lung tests, heart checks or other investigations.
We will tell you ahead of your appointment if you need to fast or bring a sample in with you.
Your results are reviewed by a clinician and will appear on the NHS app. We will also call you if anything needs follow-up.
Health Promotion & Wellbeing Checks
Our Practice Nurses and HCAs provide a variety of general health and wellbeing services, including:
Well Woman and Well Man checks
Heart disease prevention and lifestyle advice
Menopause support and counselling
Patients aged 40–75 are invited every five years for an NHS Health Check to assess the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease.
Your HCA may take your measurements and blood sample before you discuss your results with a nurse or GP.
Travel Health Clinic
If you’re travelling abroad, our Practice Nurses can advise on vaccinations and travel health precautions.
Please complete a travel risk assessment form at least 8 weeks before you travel so we can plan your vaccinations in time.
The nurse will review your form, advise on recommended vaccines, and offer practical travel advice.
Vaccinations
We offer a wide range of NHS and travel vaccinations, including:
Flu and COVID-19
Shingles
Pneumococcal
Whooping cough (for pregnant women)
Travel vaccines
We also offer catch-up vaccinations where immunisations were previously missed as part of the childhood vaccination schedule, including:
HPV
MMR
Some vaccines and blood tests are provided by an HCA, while others are administered by a Practice Nurse.
If you’re unsure which vaccinations you’ve had or need, please contact us for advice.
Wound Care
Our HCAs and Practice Nurses provide wound care services.
HCAs can carry out basic wound care such as suture and clip removal and simple dressings
Practice Nurses manage more complex wounds, including compression bandaging, ulcer care, and advanced dressing management
If you have a new or ongoing wound, please contact reception to arrange the appropriate appointment.
